EU Language Label
The
university of Aveiro got awarded a European label for innovative
measures in the fields of foreign language learning. Indeed, the
portuguese part of the Hook-up!
e-learning module, which has been developed by researchers and
teachers of the Language and Culture department, has been
successfully awarded this label. Hook up! is an excellent example of a project pursuing the development of online language teaching in order to meet the needs of students, particularly those embarking in academic mobility. Financed by the EUF-CE and by an LLP grant, the e-learning module offers a platform for 12 EU languages. This opportunity is available to all students planning to spend a year abroad and its aim is to give them a good knowledge of the local language so that they are able to follow the courses in the local language of their host universities and get well integrated in the local community.
The University of Aveiro, decided to join the Hook-up! project in 2009 and has successfully conducted the portuguese language courses from then on. To be successful, such a foreign language course has to meet several criteria such as having an added value within the national context, being oriented on the motivation of students and professors, being original and creative, having a European outlook and being transferable. Additionally, it has to promote e-community learning and target the working environment, both being the priorities set out for 2010/11 by the EU. One can say that with the award of such a prize, the innovative character is also recognized.
